The acreage of sweet point pepper has been increasing over the past years, even though it is still seen as a specialty crop in many areas. The market for sweet point peppers is interesting and Eminent Seeds has been actively breeding for new varieties in this segment The results of our breeding program are very promising!
We have been investing more time, energy and money in the sweet point pepper breeding program in the last couple of years. Kevin Valk, the pepper breeder at Eminent Seeds, tells us that he sees a continuous change in the desired sweet point pepper. “It is always a challenge to breed varieties for the future”, says Kevin. “Due to the outbreak of ToBRFV we see that Tm:3 resistance is the standard for peppers now. The high level of thrips this year has led to a new demand for TSWV resistance”. Next to disease resistances, we aim for high yielding varieties with a high amount of class I fruits, good shelf life and a labor friendly plant.
We started testing our new varieties in multiple areas in the world; we had big breeding trials in Spain, Israel, The Netherlands and Italy. Kevin tells us enthusiastically; “We have collected all the data, some varieties have been eliminated and we selected the most promising varieties. There are seeds available for trials of these selected varieties.”
